How hotels and restaurantsare graded in Cap-Haïtien

What the 2021 hibiscus grades for hotels and the four restaurant levels mean, and what they do not tell you.

Important. Grades date from 2021 and some businesses may have changed or closed.

The Ministry of Tourism grades hotels from 2 to 5 hibiscus, its equivalent of stars, by the share of criteria a hotel meets. The criteria cover comfort (regular electricity, running water at all times, a bathroom in each room), services (room service, internet, breakfast) and welcome (accessibility, capacity, pleasant indoor and outdoor settings).

Level 1, 5 hibiscus: meets 70 to 80% of the criteria.
Level 2, 4 hibiscus: meets 50 to 60%.
Level 3, 3 hibiscus: meets 30 to 40%.
Level 4, 2 hibiscus: meets 10 to 20%.

Restaurants are graded from level 1 to level 4 on preparation, presentation, customer satisfaction and quality standards.

Level 1: the highest level in the region.
Level 2: restaurants with a bar, nightclub or club.
Level 3: fast food, limited choice.
Level 4: very limited premises and services.

This classification dates from 2021 and is not exhaustive. A grade is not a Gidnou check: confirm that a business is open, and its prices, before you travel.
